2014 National Bank SME Awards Provincial Winners Unveiled
As part of the 20th edition of the SME Awards recognition program, National Bank unveiled this year's 15 provincial winners during a gala last Friday at Marché Bonsecours in Montreal. These companies were selected for their impressive performance and the expertise of their leaders. They also stand out for their contribution to the prosperity of our society. The 2014 regional and provincial winners shared a total of $750,000 in prizes, thanks to the participation and support of numerous partners.
In addressing the nearly 250 people in attendance at the gala, Louis Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank, stressed the importance of celebrating the success of Quebec SMEs: "True to its founding mission, National Bank has been committed to promoting the development of local businesses for over 150 years. The SME Awards pay tribute to the exceptional performance of Quebec companies and their leaders, along with their contribution to the economic and social vitality of the communities they serve. Your commitment is a great example of our province's entrepreneurial spirit, and is a great source of pride for our institution."

AGRIBUSINESS SME: PÉPINIÈRE R.Y. LOCAS INC. (Pépinière R.Y. Locas Inc.), LAVAL
Cultivating beauty – A third generation family business, the Locas nursery has grown and was modernized over the years to offer a wide variety of plants, flowers and exclusive products in its large greenhouses that customers can visit. Specialists are on hand to offer them the solutions best suited to their needs.
EXPORT SME: LES INDUSTRIES FIL MÉTALLIQUE MAJOR LTÉE (Les Industries Fil Major Ltée), CANDIAC
Sifting through the world’s markets – Established 130 years ago, Major Wire Industries makes wire screens for separating aggregate (stone, sand, gravel) and for the mining industry. After being acquired by its current president in 1990, Major sold a 40% interest in 2012 to Germany’s Haver & Boecker, bringing Major instant international exposure.
SME WITH LESS THAN $5 MILLION IN SALES: COVOITURAGE AMIGO EXPRESS (Covoiturage Amigo Express), MONTREAL
Travelling companions – Since 2006, Amigo Express has been bringing together drivers and passengers for intercity ride sharing. After 8 years in Quebec, the company has expanded into the rest of Canada and the U.S.
SME WITH $5-10 MILLION IN SALES: CYCLONE LIGHTING INC. (Cyclone Lighting Inc.), MONTREAL
The architecture of light – Cyclone Lighting designs and manufactures exterior decorative lighting such as postlamps, bollards and sconces, for a clientele that includes municipalities, architects and real estate developers. The company focuses on lighting performance, especially the ratio between light emitted and the energy consumed.
SME WITH $10-50 MILLION IN SALES: AVRIL SUPERMARCHÉ SANTÉ (Avril Supermarché Santé), GRANBY
360° health and well-being– Founded in 1995, Avril operates three natural health products stores in the Montérégie area. These stores offer organic and natural foods, supplements and vitamins, organic and natural cosmetics, a specialized bookstore, a bistro, a Crudessence counter, naturopathy consultation services and beauty treatments.
JURY’S CHOICE SME – Woman Entrepreneur: VAL-LAIT S.E.N.C. (Val-Lait S.E.N.C.), STOKE
Every last drop delicious – The Val-Lait farm is a member of the Agropur coop. Founded in 1963 and handed down in 2002, the operation manages 490 head of Holstein cattle. Val-Lait also has 1,808 acres in crops and a woodlot certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
