National Bank to become major partner of tennis in Quebec - Landmark partnership also to include presenting sponsorship of Rogers Cup in Montreal
Montreal, 7 March 2005 -
Tennis Canada is proud to announce it will be joining forces with National Bank until 2009 as the presenting sponsor of the Rogers Cup men’s and women’s tennis championships in Montreal. Through this major sponsorship, the Bank aims to contribute to the development and expansion of tennis throughout Quebec. National Bank will also sponsor a full slate of events in and around Montreal to encourage young hopefuls to achieve their dreams of being the best.
“We are very pleased with this major partnership between National Bank and Tennis Canada,” stated Jack Graham, Board Chair, Tennis Canada. “We are particularly proud that National Bank has chosen to support the development of Quebec athletes on a year-round basis in addition to gaining presenting rights to the Rogers Cup in Montreal. This constitutes the single biggest direct contribution to tennis development from a sponsor ever to occur in Canada. Support from a prosperous and dynamic company such as National Bank demonstrates the vitality of our sport in Quebec; a model for the rest of the country.”
By partnering with Tennis Canada, National Bank will present the prestigious Rogers Cup tournament in Montreal until 2009, and will help increase its visibility among the more than 165,000 expected to attend the week-long event. Beginning in the Fall of 2005 and for the remainder of the five-year agreement, the Bank will also sponsor six new regional tournaments, with annual prize money of $10,000 to $25,000 US. It will also award $50,000 CDN in bursaries to young Quebec athletes each year. In collaboration with Tennis Québec, the Bank will participate in a province-wide tour. The Bank will also support the National Bank Tennis Plus program for municipalities, as well as indoor and outdoor tennis clubs that want to encourage more and more Quebecers to take up tennis.
“National Bank is very pleased to be associated with this major event which continues to gain in popularity and build a loyal following. This alliance gives us an opportunity to promote tennis throughout Quebec,” stated Réal Raymond, President and Chief Executive Officer of National Bank. “Sponsoring an event of this kind is a perfect fit for us because Tennis Canada, like the Bank, is a leader that sets the standard in its field of activity. We believe that this partnership will be mutually beneficial and that we will make a great team over the next five years, while supporting up-and-coming players.”
National Bank has sponsored the tournaments in Quebec City and Granby for a number of years. It also lends it support to sports through several groups, such as the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence and the Montreal Impact soccer team. This new association with Tennis Canada is a natural extension of the Bank’s longstanding involvement in sports sponsorship to encourage excellence, determination and promote the training and development of professional and amateur athletes.
“Talk about a perfect match,” said Eugène Lapierre, Director of the Montreal office and Tournament Director, Tennis Canada. “National Bank’s well-known slogan “Hi, may I help you?” is a perfect reflection of this new partnership. It was quite evident from the beginning that National Bank shared our enthusiasm for the development of our Quebec athletes as well as their major impact with our world-class event.”
