The National Bank affirms its Strategic Partnership with COGNICASE in the Electronic Commerce Market

Montreal, 27 September 2000 -

The National Bank affirms its intention to offer all its clients a full range of on-line services. In this regard, the agreement announced yesterday (September 26) with the firm Commerce Surefire inc. requires amplification:

  1. The agreement is intended solely for commercial clients of the National Bank's MasterCard division;
  2. The agreement is intended to allow the National Bank's MasterCard division to make the most of transactions performed using MasterCard products.

In this regard, the National Bank wishes to simultaneously confirm both the exclusiveness of its business relationship with the firm COGNICASE, and the quality of the links that unite our firms. The agreement with Commerce Surefire inc. is intended to provide commercial clients of the MasterCard division with a wide choice of business solutions that facilitate the execution of transactions on line, and the capture of these transactions performed using MasterCard products and services. All products or business solutions developed by COGNICASE are and will be used and promoted by the National Bank or its subsidiaries, as is notably the case with the "Click-on Markets" multi-client and multi-supplier wireless electronic commerce Internet portal, due to be marketed soon.

It follows that the agreement undertaken between the National Bank's MasterCard division and Commerce Surefire inc. has no impact on the Bank's strategy of marketing and exclusively using electronic commerce solutions from COGNICASE.

The National Bank intends as usual to offer its clients tools that allow them to access, either on-line or otherwise, financial products and services of high quality; and to offer its business and retail clients financial products and services, as well as various other complementary services, that allow them to optimize management of their operations.

National Bank of Canada is an integrated group whose mission is to provide comprehensive financial services to consumers, small and medium-sized enterprises and large corporations in its core market, while offering specialized services to its clients elsewhere in the world. The National Bank offers a full array of banking services, including all the investment banking services required by large corporations. It is an active player on international capital markets and, through its subsidiaries, is involved in securities brokerage, insurance and wealth management as well as mutual fund and retirement plan management. The National Bank has assets of over $70 billion and, together with its subsidiaries, it employs over 17,000 people. The Bank's shares are listed on the Toronto stock exchange.
